Muay Thai

Muay Thai is Thailand’s national sport and deeply embedded in the history and culture of the country. Originally created as a functional striking system for the Thai army and people to defend themselves and their families from enemy invasions, it slowly evolved into a competitive sport with the first “rings” being a simple piece of rope laid on the ground in a circle. It was also used as a way to settle civil disputes in Thailand’s more primeval eras.

At AKA Thailand we are committed to upholding the fundamental and traditional standards of instruction to offer our students a truly authentic Muay Thai training experience. Whether you are an amateur or pro fighter, fitness fanatic or trying to lose weight, Muay Thai is the perfect combat sport to help you achieve your goals.

Fighting:

Our trainers have many years of experience training foreigners and top tier Muay Thai fighters throughout the Kingdom of Thailand. They originate from the most legendary and respected gyms across the country and currently or formerly held multiple prestigious belts in various weight classes during their own careers.

If you are an amateur or professional fighter, or a beginner wanting to take on a Muay Thai, K-1 and/or MMA career, then our team and Muay Thai program at AKA Thailand will push your standup to the next level. We have world class trainers and fighters ready to train and spar with you to provide the extra support you will need in the ring.

Fitness & Weight-Loss:

Muay Thai is an excellent system to utilize for weight-loss and improving your overall fitness. It is a combination of aerobic and anaerobic training that will challenge your coordination, endurance, and mental fortitude. Mike Swick has put many hours into hand-selecting a team of talented and experienced Muay Thai trainers who have the ability to adapt the intensity of training to suit the needs of each of our students. If you are overweight and intimidated by the prospect of training in this atmosphere, you have nothing to worry about. Our trainers are friendly, professional and will respect your physical limitations while still pushing you to succeed with your fitness goals..

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Brazilian jiu–jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend himself against a larger adversary by using leverage and proper technique focusing on grappling and especially ground fighting. The Gracie family, the founders of BJJ, modified judo and traditional Japanese jujutsu to create the art.

Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is housed inside one of Thailand’s largest matted training areas. We have over 3,000 square feet of mat space so our guests have plenty of training room, no matter how big the classes are. Our 5,000 square foot MMA/BJJ facility is A/C cooled and equipped with top of the line Mooto training mats, ensuring that we have one of the safest and most comfortable training rooms in Thailand. We also have another 1,500 square feet of A/C cooled Dollamur mat space in our 2 story fitness facility.

Whether you are a novice with no experience or a seasoned practitioner, we have a program for you!

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is one of the most popular and fastest growing sports in the world. It demands that fighters utilize every combat discipline in their arsenal to compete against other competitors from the same or different training backgrounds. AKA is one of the pioneer gyms of the sport and is world renown for producing MMA Champions and stars, from the ground up. The fighter program at AKA is infamous for how hard a grueling it is, but those who have endured, have went on to find great success. Now, that same training curriculum is available in Asia at AKA Thailand.

MMA Fundamentals

The MMA Fundamentals class is designed for beginner to intermediate level students, though amateur and pro fighters are welcome to attend these sessions for extra drilling. This class focuses on basic striking and grappling for MMA and incorporates boxing, Muay Thai, Sambo, K-1, BJJ, wrestling and more. Our coaches will take you through a series of warmup drills, display new techniques and oversee controlled sparring to help you round-out your game. If your goal is to become an MMA fighter and you do not have much experience then this is the class for you. We have many students that have progressed from MMA Fundamentals into Mike Swick’s pro MMA class, and with the right amount of dedication and determination, you can too!

Whether you are looking to improve your MMA game or your actually wanting to use AKA Thailand as your fight camp to prepare for a fight, you will be pushed to your limits in a cohesive atmosphere that will elevate you to new heights. You will be pushed and coached by 15-time UFC veteran Mike “Quick” Swick, along with the whole team of highly skilled and talented fighters.

Mike Swick has been competing professionally since 1998 and was built as part of a star-studded fight team under the world renown AKA San Jose banner. Mike was an original member of AKA and was part of the Team that built its legendary curriculum through years of trial and error. For over 10 years, from having his first professional fight in a dirt rodeo arena to his last two fights being aired live on FOX, Mike has experienced it all. His knowledge and training ethic is now being passed on to the many talented fighters who have already made the move to Phuket to train full time at AKA Thailand.

Mike’s goal is to create one of the largest, most thorough and well-rounded fight camps in the world; with a heavy emphasis on conditioning, teamwork and most importantly: a high standard of training and instruction.

If it’s not just MMA training you’re after and you want to take part in AKA’s fighter training, come prepared. You will be pushed to your max and we need you to give everything you have. This class is great for martial art students and anyone looking to cross train with yoga for an improvement in overall body flexibility. Opening up the typically tight bodylines created from training. This class gets the body circulating again.

Wednesday (Vinyasa):

A dynamic stretching style class with movements focusing on core areas that need attention for martial artists while still just as effective for any student attending. This is a faster paced class to Monday and Friday.

Friday (Yin):

A slow-paced style of class with longer, easier yoga holds. Yin yoga poses apply a slow stretch to the connective tissues—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints, advancing joint mobility and improving flexibility.
